Sensitive Readings of Science: A Research Outreach Guide

The ECODOC project offers you a synthesis guide of its experiments in science facilitation

Wanting to introduce your research project means inviting people to wander through this forest of documents and scientific information. Yet, every person who encounters this research project will have a personal and unique interpretation based on their age, educational or academic background, profession, personal interests, or culture. Because, just like in a forest, multiple paths are available to us, paths we can take or leave behind.

It was based on this observation that the ECODOC team wanted to offer different ways to explore research projects, allowing everyone to appropriate research for themselves. The Sensitive Readings of Science guide proposes science communication methods rooted in sensitive and experimental approaches. It is intended for anyone(researchers, mediators, librarians, facilitators) who wishes to explore new ways of reading, expressing, or engaging with research through play.

The guide is structured into two main parts:

  • A first part that revisits the construction of the documentary corpus, i.e., a set of key scientific documents and data from the project, which serves as the necessary foundation for any mediation action;
  • A second part that details three mediation experiments proposed and tested during the ECODOC project:
    • "Telling the Story of Science": workshops on scientific storytelling;
    • "From Tree to Leaf": science slam workshops;
    • "Your Turn to Play": co-design workshops for games.

The guide was designed and written by the ECODOC team and laid out by graphic designer Marie Gaffet. It was previewed during the restitution evening at Villa Valmont on May 15th 2025 and will be distributed to project partners as well as to facilitation and information professionals. It is also available for download online on HAL or Zenodo.
